I was fortunate enough to be born into a family of artists. My mother and father both were abstract painters and art professors, and encouraged us kids to make our own art. My father was also very interested in design and illustration, and was very enthusiastic when I decided to attend Parsons in New York in the Illustration Program.
At Parsons, I studied under many wonderful illustrators including Steven Guarnaccia, Andrzej Dudzinski and Katrina Denzinger. I learned the vital responsibility that illustration serves in helping bring depth, beauty and clarity to the subject at hand. I hit the ground running after graduation in 1987, and never looked back.
My first jobs out of school were for Esquire, Business Week, and The New York Times, who I have the great fortune to continue to regularly work with. Over the years, my clients have included Time, MTV, Apple Computer, Itaú Bank, Smithsonian, Levi's, Viking, Harper Collins, The Folio Society, Chronicle Books, SF Museum of Modern Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, Harvard, Microsoft, and many others. I continue to enjoy illustrating for a variety of markets, including publishing, editorial, advertising and children's books.
I have two main thrusts in my work these days. For most editorial and advertising jobs, my aim is to create a distilled, bold visual poem that helps solidify the communication and bring a levity and humanity to the words and ideas with which it's paired. I also bring this approach to more narrative tasks, such as in illustrating children's books; creating a visual story behind quite abstract ideas such as an anagram or a palindrome.
I'm endlessly grateful for professional awards that I've received over the years as well from American Illustration, Communication Arts, AIGA, 3x3, Print and The Society of Illustrators, who've given me both Gold and Silver medals. The Society of Illustrators is just the best!
When I'm not illustrating, I enjoy working on personal pieces. Much of this work grows out of conceptual and representative thinking, but I strive to extract it into pure abstraction, letting the viewer fill in their own narratives and stories.
Now days I work out of my studio in my home in the sunny Mission district in San Francisco with my wife, designer and musician Cynthia Wigginton and our pooch Ella Pepita. I've been a drummer for most of my life, playing in all sorts of bands; my wife and I play together in Bermuda Triangle Service. And to complete the circle, I'm also an associate professor in the amazing Illustration department at California College of the Arts, where I teach alongside an amazing group of faculty.
